Parents Frequently Asked Questions

Swim Meets

How do I know what swim meets the Seals will be attending?

The swim meet schedule is available on this site.

How long do meets last?

There are six Saturday dual meets during the season. Swimmers are expected to arrive at the meets by 7:00 A.M. Swim meets begin at 8 A.M. and can last until 1-2:30 P.M. All swimmers who are participating, whether it is in one event or five events, are expected to stay until the end of the meet unless prior approval is given by the Head Coach. This promotes team building for all the swimmers.

What equipment is needed?

Swimmers need the following equipment:

  • Practice Suit - This is a suit worn during practice sessions. They are generally made of nylon, lycra or stretch nylon. These suits are usually loose fitting and many swimmers train with several suits on for the purpose of creating drag. Do not wear your team suit to practice. You want to keep this suit in excellent condition for the meets.
  • Competition/Team Suit - A team racing suit is for competition. This suit is usually 2 to 3 sizes smaller than the practice suit to reduce resistance. The material is usually lycra. Swimmers are responsible for the purchase of these suits
  • Cap - A latex or lycra swim cap used during a meet or practice to cut down resistance and to protect swimmer's hair from the effects of chlorine. Caps must be worn by anyone with hair that covers their eyes. The first team cap will be provided by the Seals. Second caps may purchased a the cost of the cap.
  • Goggles - Lenses worn by swimmers during practices and meets to enhance vision and protect their eyes from the effect of chemicals in the water.
  • Sweats - Some type of warm-up or sweat suit should be worn at meets and to and from practice during cold weather. Athletic apparel should be worn by swimmers during dry land exercises.
  • Team Uniform – The team uniform is usually made up of the following: team suit, cap, and t-shirt (Seals tie-dye).
  • Towel - A thick, large towel is usually preferred by swimmers. A minimum of two towels is recommended for meets.

What ages are eligible for the Seals?

Swimmers who are 5 through 18 as of May 15 may participate.

Are there other eligibility requirements?

Yes, the following restrictions apply:

  • A swimmer may represent only one team in Boulder Valley Summer Swim League (BVSSL) competition in any one season. To represent a team in a dual meet, a swimmer must be registered in writing or be on that team’s roster, and have paid club or team dues. Once a swimmer competes in one dual meet, team membership is determined for that season.
  • The age group for each swimmer is to be determined by the age of the swimmer on May 15th.
  • A swimmer may participate in stroke clinics and/or competitive lessons during the winter. A swimmer who does not swim more than a total of four weeks with a year-round team between the finals of the BVSSL Championships and December 31 of the previous year is eligible. A swimmer may not swim in meets from January 1st through May 14th. No exceptions will be considered.

It is important to understand these eligibility requirements, especially if your swimmer has spent any time with a year-round (USS) team. If you are uncertain of the eligibility requirements please contact the Head Coach or any board member. They will gladly help you. The full set of BVSSL By-laws are available to anyone who wishes to read them.

How do I volunteer?

Will I be able to watch my kid swim if I volunteer?

Yes. A more complete answer coming soon...

Little Seals

Can my child join the Little Seals?

The Little Seals are for ages 5-10 and for swimmers unable to swim two lengths of a 25 yard pool. The Little Seals are part of the team but the focus is on instruction rather than competition. Little Seals will be encouraged to attend meets but will compete only if and when skills allow them to without being discouraged by swimming against more experienced competitive swimmers.

Are the Little Seals competitive?

No, the Little Seals are not competitive and do not participate in any meets. However, Little Seals will be moved up to the competitive Seals team as skill progression allows.
