About The Seals
The Lafayette Swim Team is dedicated to creating a positive swimming environment for all children 5-18 years of age. We are committed to teaching the necessary skills for children to participate in competitive swimming. Some of our goals are to promote self-confidence, individual responsibility, hard work and team spirit.
Team Objectives
The Lafayette Seals Swim Team is a competitive summer league swimming team offering summer instruction, training and competition to young people. The Lafayette Seals program is available to help develop successful people, as well as successful swimmers. To meet these goals, the following team objectives have been determined:
- To provide physical fitness, proper conditioning, and a development of positive self-image through organized and motivating practice sessions.
- To provide and environment for self-improvement and goal achievement through hard work, dedication and self-discipline.
- To promote the ideals of integrity, good sportsmanship and team loyalty through competition for swimmers of all levels.
- To develop a family-oriented swim team with school and parent support.
The Lafayette Seals Swim Team participates in the Boulder Valley Summer Swim League. We attempt to provide challenging and success-oriented situations for swimmers of all abilities. The following policies outline our philosophy about competition: We emphasize competition with oneself. Winning ribbons, medals, and setting records is not our main goal. The individual's improvement is our primary objective. Sportsmanlike behavior is of equal importance to improved performance. Team spirit, respect for officials and opponents, determined effort, and mature attitudes are examples of behavior valued and praised by the coaching staff. Swimmers are taught to set realistic yet challenging goals for meets and to relate those goals in practice in an effort to direct their training efforts.
Swimmers are encouraged to compete in all swimming events and strokes. This policy promotes versatility and encourages swimmers to explore their potential in the wide range of events offered in Summer Swimming.
Lafayette Swim Team Information and Swimmer RequirementsThe Lafayette Swim Team is a Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department sponsored program. The team is a member of the Boulder Valley Summer Swim League (BVSSL). Swimmers are required to register with the Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department, and to provide the coach with a signed BVSSL registration form. The BVSSL form states the eligibility requirements for the league. If you have any questions about the swim team, Lafayette Aquatics Supervisor or one of the parent board members will be glad to help you.
Team Facts and Swimmer eligibilityThe BVSSL currently comprises fifteen member teams mostly from the Boulder area. The member teams are: Angel Pines CC, Boulder CC, Boulder Burst (city), Broomfield Swim and Tennis Club, Elks, Fox Hill CC, High Mar (YMCA), Lafayette (city), Louisville(city), Meadowglen, Meadows, Mesa, Rally Sport, Ranch CC, and Rock Creek. One change to this list for 2003--the Gators and Burst have merged.
The BVSSL is governed by a set of by-laws, which are maintained by the consensus vote of representatives from all member teams of the league. These by-laws state the following requirements for swimmer eligibility:
- A swimmer may represent only one team in BVSSL competition in any one season. To represent a team in a dual meet, a swimmer must be registered in writing or be on that team's roster, and have paid club or team dues. Once a swimmer competes in one dual meet, team membership is determined for that season.
- The age group for each swimmer is to be determined by the age of the swimmer on May 15.
- A swimmer may participate in stroke clinics and/or competitive lessons during the winter. A swimmer who does not swim more than a total of four weeks with a year-round team between the finals of the BVSSL Championships and December 31 of the previous year is eligible. A swimmer may not swim in meets from January 1 through May 14. No exceptions will be considered. Please Note: These eligibility requirements may have changed. The changes will be reflected in the form that each swimmer will be required to sign in order to participate.
